  • 10 Skincare Products Worth Investing In For Skin Over 40 — A Licensed Esthetician’s Picks

10 Best Skincare Products for Skin Over 40 — A Licensed Esthetician’s Picks

If there is one thing I’ve learned from more than 15 years behind the treatment table, it’s that a great skincare routine doesn’t need to be complicated.

Skin changes as we get older. You may start noticing more dryness, changes in texture and tone, fine lines, or that products you loved ten years ago just don’t seem to work quite the same way anymore.

That doesn’t mean you need a shelf full of products.

For skin over 40, I tend to focus on a few things: gentle cleansing, antioxidants, hydration, cell turnover, barrier support and daily sun protection.

I’ve put together 10 products from established skincare brands that I think are worth knowing about. I’ve also intentionally chosen products across different brands and price points rather than building an entire routine from one line.

You certainly don’t need all 10. Think of this as a guide to help you decide where a product might fit into your routine.

    1. PCA SKIN Creamy Cleanser

Best for: Gentle cleansing, normal-to-dry skin and skin that feels tight after washing

Let’s start with the least glamorous part of a skincare routine — and one of the most important.

Your cleanser doesn’t need to make your skin feel squeaky clean. In fact, if your face feels tight immediately after washing it, I usually consider that a sign that we should take another look at your cleanser.

PCA SKIN Creamy Cleanser is a richer cleansing formula designed to remove impurities while leaving the skin feeling soft and comfortable.

    Why I like it

As skin becomes drier, I generally prefer cleansing without unnecessarily stripping away moisture.

A creamy cleanser is an easy change that can make the rest of a dry-skin routine feel much better.

ESTHETICIAN TIP: Clean does not have to mean tight. Your skin should feel comfortable after you wash your face.

    2. La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C12 Serum

Best for: Dullness, uneven tone, fine lines and antioxidant support

Vitamin C is one of my favorite ingredients for a morning skincare routine.

La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C12 Serum contains 12% pure vitamin C and is designed to improve radiance and the appearance of wrinkles and skin texture.

    Why I like it

Vitamin C is an ingredient where formulation matters, and I don’t think you need to chase the highest percentage you can find.

I like this as a more approachable alternative to some professional vitamin C serums that cost well over $100.

For skin over 40, it gives us a way to add antioxidant support while addressing some of the changes we commonly start noticing more — particularly dullness and uneven tone.

ESTHETICIAN TIP: I like vitamin C in the morning, followed by moisturizer and sunscreen. Vitamin C complements your SPF; it doesn’t replace it.

    3. Obagi Daily Hydro-Drops

Best for: Dehydration, dryness and dull-looking skin

There’s a difference between skin that needs hydration and skin that needs more oil or richness — and sometimes it needs both.

Obagi Daily Hydro-Drops is a lightweight facial serum formulated with vitamin B3 and Abyssinian and hibiscus oils.

    Why I like it

This is the kind of product I like when skin simply looks tired, dull or dehydrated.

It adds another layer of hydration and comfort without immediately reaching for a very heavy cream, and it can be layered into an existing routine rather than requiring you to change everything you’re already using.

ESTHETICIAN TIP: Think of a hydrating serum as a layer, not necessarily your moisturizer replacement. Apply your moisturizer over it when your skin needs both hydration and moisture.

    4. Medik8 Liquid Peptides

Best for: Fine lines, hydration and an age-supportive routine

Peptides aren’t a replacement for sunscreen, retinoids or every other proven ingredient in skincare, but they can be a beautiful addition to a well-rounded routine.

Medik8 Liquid Peptides is a hydrating serum formulated with multiple peptides and designed to target the appearance of fine lines.

    Why I like it

Not every product in an over-40 routine needs to exfoliate, resurface or make your face peel.

I like having a supportive serum in the mix — particularly for someone who wants to address visible aging while maintaining hydration.

It’s also a nice example of where a sophisticated skincare routine can be about supporting the skin rather than constantly attacking it.

Think of peptides as messengers that help support some of your skin’s natural processes. Matrixyl 3000, one of the peptide complexes in this serum, is especially well known for supporting the skin structures involved in firmness and helping improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time.

    5. Paula’s Choice Clinical PRO Retinaldehyde Dual-Retinoid Treatment

Best for: Fine lines, wrinkles, texture and visible signs of aging

If we’re talking about a serious over-40 skincare routine, vitamin A deserves a place in the conversation.

This Paula’s Choice treatment uses retinaldehyde as part of a dual-retinoid formula designed to address fine lines, wrinkles and uneven texture.

    Why I like it

Retinoids are one of the categories where I’d rather see someone choose a thoughtful formula and introduce it properly than buy the strongest product they can find.

Consistency matters much more than turning your face into a shedding snake for two weeks and then giving up.

Start slowly and give your skin time to adjust.

ESTHETICIAN TIP: Start a retinoid a few nights per week rather than assuming nightly use is automatically better. Moisturize well and take your daytime SPF seriously.

    6. EltaMD AM Restore Facial Moisturizer

Best for: Daily hydration and supporting the skin barrier

This is the part of skincare that isn’t very sexy — but it’s incredibly important.

A good moisturizer helps support the skin barrier and reduces water loss. And as skin becomes drier, that basic job becomes increasingly valuable.

EltaMD’s lightweight facial moisturizer is designed to hydrate while supporting healthy-looking skin.

    Why I like it

We can get so focused on vitamin C, peptides, retinoids and exfoliation that we forget the basics.

Sometimes the thing your skin needs isn’t another active.

    It needs moisture.

I like a moisturizer that can quietly do its job while the treatment products handle the more targeted work.

ESTHETICIAN TIP: A good moisturizer does more than make your skin feel soft. It helps reduce water loss and supports your skin barrier, which becomes especially important as skin tends to get drier with age.

    7. Revision Skincare D·E·J Eye Cream

Best for: Fine lines and visible aging around the eye area

I’ll say something that skincare marketing doesn’t always tell you:

Not everyone needs a separate eye cream.

A well-formulated facial moisturizer may be perfectly adequate for some people.

But if the eye area is one of your primary concerns and you want a dedicated treatment, Revision D·E·J Eye Cream is one I’d consider.

    Why I like it

I would rather see you spend money on one thoughtfully formulated eye treatment than collect five little jars promising miracles.

The skin around the eyes is delicate, and this is one area where I’m generally not interested in being overly aggressive.

ESTHETICIAN TIP: The skin around your eyes is thinner than the skin on most of your face, which is one reason changes like fine lines and dryness can show up there first. Apply eye products gently — tapping or pressing them in is plenty. You don’t need to rub or pull at the skin.

    8. Peter Thomas Roth FIRMx Peeling Gel

Best for: Dullness, rough texture and occasional exfoliation

Exfoliation can make skin look and feel noticeably smoother, but I don’t think every step of an over-40 skincare routine needs to contain an acid.

Peter Thomas Roth FIRMx Peeling Gel is an exfoliating gel designed to help lift away surface buildup and improve the appearance of dull texture.

    Why I like it

I’m a fan of purposeful exfoliation.

I’m not a fan of cleanser + acid toner + exfoliating serum + retinoid + peel because TikTok told you that more actives equal better skin.

Especially if you’re already using a retinoid, pay attention to the routine as a whole.

ESTHETICIAN TIP: As we age, natural cell turnover slows, which can leave skin looking dull and feeling rough or uneven. Exfoliation helps remove built-up surface cells so skin looks smoother and brighter — but more isn’t better. Over-exfoliating can compromise your skin barrier and work against the results you’re trying to achieve.

    9. Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50

Best for: Daily mineral sun protection with tinted coverage

If you buy only one thing because of this article, let me make the argument for sunscreen.

We can spend hundreds of dollars on retinoids, antioxidants, peptides, facials and devices — but protecting our skin from UV exposure remains foundational.

Colorescience Face Shield Flex SPF 50 is a mineral sunscreen with tone-adapting tinted coverage.

    Why I like it

I like sunscreen that people actually enjoy wearing.

The tint can help even the appearance of the complexion while providing SPF 50 protection, making it an appealing option for someone who doesn’t necessarily want sunscreen plus foundation plus several other layers every morning.

ESTHETICIAN TIP: SPF isn’t just for sunny days or days spent outside. UV exposure happens year-round and is one of the biggest contributors to premature skin aging, including wrinkles, loss of firmness and uneven pigmentation. A broad-spectrum SPF every morning is one of the best things you can do to protect the results of the rest of your skincare routine.

    10. StriVectin TL Advanced Tightening Neck Cream PLUS

    Best for: Neck and décolletage

Your skincare routine doesn’t end at your jawline.

The neck and chest are frequently exposed to the same environmental factors as the face, yet they’re two of the easiest areas to forget until changes become more noticeable.

StriVectin’s TL Advanced Tightening Neck Cream PLUS is formulated specifically for the neck and décolletage and is designed to improve the appearance of lines, crepey texture and firmness.

    Why I like it

Do you absolutely need a separate neck cream?

    No.

But if your neck and décolletage are specific areas of concern, I think a dedicated treatment can make sense.

More importantly, whatever you’re using — bring your skincare down.

Your neck deserves some love too.

    So…Do You Need All 10?

    Absolutely not.

Please don’t read this article and order ten new products tonight.

If I were helping someone build a skincare routine from scratch, I’d establish the foundation first:

    Cleanse → Treat → Moisturize → Protect

Then I’d add targeted products based on what your skin actually needs.

A beautiful skincare routine isn’t the one with the most bottles.

It’s the one that makes sense for your skin, your goals, your budget — and your life.

That’s really what I want Ritual Skincare to be about.

I’ve spent more than 15 years working hands-on with skin, and I’ll be using this space to share professional skincare, products I genuinely like, tools worth buying, things you can probably skip, and the little rituals that make taking care of ourselves feel good.

Because taking care of your skin should feel like a ritual, not a guessing game.
